I forgot why we use cp && rm instead of mv in the gzip installation. I dimly remember something about moving hard links across filesystems. Was this the issue here? How about putting a note about it in the book.

Yes, it's the hard links problem (if your $LFS and $LFS/usr are on different partitions, a mv will fail).

A note would be good yes. Even better, use the same instructions we use in chapter 6. May as well make them uniform. I remember this has been said on this list before and somehow it never made Bugzilla. Perhaps I overruled it, but I can't remember why.

So, it's in bugzilla with a note for me to find out why it was overruled a while ago.

Another thing:

remove the compress symlink. gzip can't create .Z files, it can, however, uncompress them.

Not going to change the install. instructions

in chapter 5 we cp+rm because we're not bothering making symlinks as they are only temporary files anyways. In chapter 6 we only mv gzip but then create symlinks for gunzip etc, so no need to cp+rm them.

I have removed the compress references.

I've added a note to chap5 why we cp+rm
